Bonneville Salt Flats

Moving from one RV park to another we would always set a specific time in the morning to leave. Out of 18 of those attempts we only succeeded 2 or 3 times! With that said, July 2nd was one of them! This was going to be one of our longest days in the car as we decided to drive the entire state of Nevada in one day. It was 550 miles from Lake Tahoe to Salt Lake City as we were pushing to make it to Vail Valley to have an extra day in one of our favorite areas.

The drive was a success and our favorite stop along the way was the Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway. I’ve always known about the flats, as I’ve followed several world land speed record attempts, but had no idea we would be driving past it.

Part of this drive seemed to go up hill forever so it was nice to run down hill for a while.
In addition to wind turbine farms, double stacked container trains also became an obsession. You can get a little bored driving 8,000 miles in 33 days so you need a few odd things to look forward to. We don’t see double stacked trains in NC nor do we see the entire train in one instance.
This is the speedway access road just off Hwy 80.
Just 26 days prior to our arrival this entire area was under water. It dries out quickly and the area is prepped for speed weeks held in August and September.
We pulled off the end of the access road for a quick picture but did not go any farther. The surface in that area was hard but beyond that was still soft as it was continuing to dry out for the season.
It appears to go on forever and makes for some great photo opportunities. There were several cars further off in the distance where there was still some water.
