Moab – Fathers Day 6/16

This will certainly be one of the most memorable fathers days to date. Since we have been running so hard we decided to take the morning off at the camper and then drive in to Moab for lunch. Moab has a great small town feel and buzzing with Jeeps, ATVs, UTVs, etc. as the majority of people are there to enjoy Sand Flats Recreational Park. The park is recognized world wide for its challenging terrain and view. Sand Flats is 9,000 square acres with 175,000 visitors annually.

Fathers day lunch was at El Charro Loco where Dina and I split the “El Charro Loco” which is a grilled pineapple stuffed with steak, grilled chicken, shrimp, onions, and peppers. It sounds a little crazy but was excellent and would highly recommend this local Mexican restaurant.

After lunch we returned to Arches National Park to hit Windows arches and the Double arch. While at Windows a small storm blew in which caused a group of us to take cover for a few minutes as the arch was funneling the wind and everyone was getting sand blasted. Double arch was incredible but also the site of a sketchy parenting decision as we all climbed up a sand/rock slide to a scenic overlook (that I’m sure they don’t recommend). I’m wondering if we are become numb to the danger of some of the features because we’ve been around them for several days. When we pulled up to the parking lot I said “look at that nut job on the ridge”….and within 15 minutes we were standing in that exact spot!

The day’s grand finale was Moab Adventure Center’s Hummer Sunset Hell’s Revenge Tour. This trail is recognized around the world and will completely freak you out if you were not aware that a vehicle could operate at such extreme angles. Videos and pictures do not do it justice.

Monday 6/17 we head to Kanab, Utah which is our base camp for exploring Zion, Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Kane Creek Rd in Moab. Great trail that follows the Colorado River.
The kids spotted what appears to be a wild cow that has horns and an utter. Wasn’t sure that was possible but will have to Google it!
Along Kane Creek you can watch the serious rock crawlers working a trail up on the hill.
View from one of many bad parenting decisions that day. If you climb the slide right of double arch there is a flat spot with this incredible view.
Traversing from bad parenting ridge to double arch.
Entry Fin for Hell’s Revenge trail.
Watching the sunset.

It was nice of our Guide, Chad, to pull off the sunset peak as the full moon was rising over La Sal Mountains.
